Premium Western Red Cedar Fencing

Western Red Cedar is our premium wood-fencing option because of its natural beauty, dimensional stability, durability, and natural resistance to decay and insects. When properly stained and maintained, Western Red Cedar can provide many years of performance while maintaining the rich, natural appearance that makes cedar one of the most desirable materials for residential privacy fencing.

For homeowners looking for a more budget-friendly cedar fence, we also offer Japanese Cedar. Both options can be professionally pre-stained to help protect the wood from moisture, UV exposure, and the demanding North Texas climate. We do not install Whitewood, Spruce, or treated-pine fence pickets. Our focus is on cedar fencing that delivers the appearance, performance, and long-term value our customers expect from Texas Backyard Living. Our goal is to provide North Texas homeowners with professionally built cedar fences backed by quality materials, detailed construction standards, and long-term service, and to be Texas’s best fence company!

How We Build Our Cedar Fences

From the initial design to the final inspection, we follow a proven process to build a quality cedar fence designed to last.

1

Fence Design & Estimate

We meet with the homeowner, measure the property, and discuss their needs, including fence layout, height, style, gates, and material options.

2

Pre-Staining

Each board is dipped in Wood Defender Medium Brown Transparent stain to ensure full saturation and protection from the elements.

3

Fence Demolition

The existing fence is carefully demolished and hauled away from the property.

4

Post Installation

We set heavy-duty 2 3/8-inch steel posts 3 feet deep using high-strength Maximizer concrete.

5

Fence Construction

We install 2x4 cedar rails and a 2x6 treated pine kickboard along the ground using galvanized steel brackets. Pickets are then secured to the rails using 1 7/8-inch ring-shank galvanized nails.

6

Gates & Trim

We frame and cut out the gates and touch up all cuts with stain. A 4-inch top trim is installed, and upgraded fences may include a 2x6 top cap or boxed posts.

7

Clean Up & Inspection

We thoroughly clean the property of debris and spread dirt along the bottom of the new fence. Finally, we walk the completed fence with the homeowner to ensure customer satisfaction.

Pre-stained fences are highly recommended and are our most popular fence installation option. Pre-stained cedar fencing offers many benefits that traditional unstained cedar fencing cannot match.

Why Choose Pre-stained Cedar Fencing?

  • Enhanced Durability: Our pre-stained cedar fences are treated with high- quality Wood Defender stain that penetrates deep into the wood, providing superior protection against moisture, UV rays, and insect damage. This results in a longer lifespan for your fence and reduced maintenance requirements.
  • Timeless Beauty: Our medium brown Wood Defender transparent stain accents the rich, natural hues of cedar, creating a luxurious finish that adds warmth and elegance to any outdoor space.
  • Immediate Enjoyment: Unlike unstained cedar fencing, which requires time- consuming staining or sealing after installation, pre-stained cedar fencing is ready to enjoy as soon as it's installed, saving you time and hassle.

Fence Styles We Build

Board on Board Cedar Fences in Dallas - Fort Worth, TX

If you want to enhance privacy, increase security, and add style to your property, our expert fence installation team is here to help.

Board-on-board fencing offers several advantages over traditional fencing styles, making it a popular choice for homeowners and businesses alike:

  • Enhanced Privacy: Board-on-board fencing's overlapping design provides maximum privacy, making it ideal for backyard retreats, pool areas, and outdoor entertaining spaces.

Side by Side Cedar Fences in Dallas - Fort Worth, TX

Overall, the side-by-side fence is often the most economical type of fence style, in which we nail pickets with the boards edge to edge. A small amount of shrinkage can be expected between the pickets of a side-by-side style fence, creating a small gap. A side-by-side fence is one of the most cost-efficient fences without having to sacrifice the beauty of your backyard and fence.

Side-by-side fencing offers a blend of aesthetics and functionality that makes it a popular choice for homeowners and businesses:

  • Privacy: The pickets are nailed edge to edge to minimize gaps, but some gapping can be expected.
  • Security: With minimal gaps between the boards, side-by-side fencing creates a solid barrier that helps deter intruders and keeps children and pets safely contained.
  • Visual Appeal: The basic design of side-by-side fencing creates an attractive, dimensional look that adds charm and character to any property.
  • Durability: Our side-by-side fences are constructed with high-quality Western Red Cedar materials and expert craftsmanship, built to withstand the elements and stand the test of time.

Horizontal Cedar Fences in Dallas - Fort Worth, TX

Horizontal fences are constructed with horizontally oriented fence pickets in board-on-board or side-by-side styles. Horizontal fences create a more modern look than a traditional fence, and for many houses and neighborhoods, horizontal fences are the de facto look.

  • Modern Aesthetic: Horizontal fences provide a contemporary and sleek look
compared to traditional vertical fences, making them popular for modern
    architecture and landscaping design
  • Durability: Our horizontal fences are constructed with high-quality Western
Red Cedar materials and expert craftsmanship.
  • Customizable: Horizontal cedar fences can be easily customized in terms of
height, spacing between planks, and overall design. This flexibility allows for
a fence that fits specific aesthetic and functional needs.

Shadow Box Fences in Dallas - Fort Worth, TX

A shadowbox fence is a specific style with small gaps between the vertical boards. Fence pickets are attached to the rails on alternating sides rather than all on one side, giving the fence an attractive look and allowing for airflow within your yard.

Shadow box fencing offers several advantages that make it a popular choice among homeowners and businesses:

  • Enhanced Privacy: The alternating panels of shadow box fencing provide privacy while allowing airflow through the fence, making it ideal for areas where ventilation is essential.
  • Visual Appeal: Shadow box fencing's unique design creates an attractive, dimensional look that adds charm and character to any property.
  • Neighbor-Friendly: Unlike solid privacy fences, shadow box fencing maintains a friendly appearance from both sides, making it an ideal option for shared property lines.
  • Durability: Constructed with high-quality Western Red Cedar materials and expert craftsmanship, our shadow box fences are built to withstand the elements and stand the test of time.

Ornamental Steel & Wrought Iron Fences in Dallas - Fort Worth, TX

Today, “wrought iron” fences are constructed of galvanized powder-coated steel. They offer security while allowing full visibility. Instead of welding, which is a catalyst for rust, we use adjustable clips to connect the panels to the posts.

Wrought iron fencing offers a blend of classic beauty and robust security that makes it a popular choice for homeowners and businesses alike:

  • Timeless Elegance: Wrought iron fences exude timeless elegance and sophistication, enhancing any property's curb appeal and value.
  • Security: With its sturdy steel construction, wrought iron fencing provides a high level of security, deterring intruders and keeping your property safe.
  • Durability: Wrought iron fences are built to withstand the elements and stand the test of time. They are incredibly durable and require minimal maintenance.

Fence Retaining Walls in Dallas - Fort Worth, TX

Retaining walls are ideal when land is higher on one side of a fence than on the other side. They create a barrier that prevents soil from shifting or sliding downslope. Texas Backyard Living adheres to high construction standards when we build retaining walls. We offer Pressure-Treated Pine, Stone, and Concrete retaining walls.

Fence retaining walls offer a unique combination of beauty and functionality, making them an ideal choice for properties with sloped terrain or erosion issues:

  • Erosion Control: Fence retaining walls help prevent soil erosion and runoff, stabilizing the landscape and protecting your property from damage.
  • Increased Usable Space: By leveling out sloped areas, fence retaining walls create additional usable space for landscaping, gardening, or outdoor activities.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics: We offer a wide range of retaining wall designs and material options so your wall can be customized to complement your property's style and enhance its curb appeal.
  • Structural Support: Besides their aesthetic benefits, fence retaining walls provide structural support for fences, ensuring stability and longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fences

Get answers to common questions about cedar fencing, materials, pricing, installation, maintenance, and warranties in Dallas–Fort Worth.

How much does a cedar fence cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?

The cost of a cedar fence in Dallas–Fort Worth depends on the type of cedar, fence height, fence style, total linear footage, gates, retaining walls, stain, and other custom features. Western Red Cedar typically costs more than Japanese Cedar, while board-on-board fencing generally costs more than a standard side-by-side fence because it requires additional materials and labor.

Texas Backyard Living provides free fence estimates so homeowners can compare materials, fence styles, and options based on their property and budget.

Fence Type Typical Price Range
6' Japanese Cedar $50–$60 / ft.
6' Western Red Cedar $50–$65 / ft.
8' Japanese Cedar $60–$75 / ft.
8' Western Red Cedar $65–$80 / ft.
* Typical pricing ranges: Prices are provided for general planning purposes and may change based on material prices, fence design, property conditions, demolition, gates, retaining walls, and other project requirements.
Is Western Red Cedar better than Japanese Cedar?

Western Red Cedar is our premium cedar fencing option, while Japanese Cedar provides a more budget-friendly alternative. Western Red Cedar is valued for its natural beauty, dimensional stability, durability, and natural resistance to decay and insects.

Japanese Cedar can be a good choice for homeowners who want the appearance of a cedar fence at a lower price point. Texas Backyard Living installs both Western Red Cedar and Japanese Cedar fences and can help homeowners compare the differences before choosing a material.

How long does a cedar fence last in North Texas?

A properly constructed and maintained cedar fence can provide many years of service in North Texas, but there is no single lifespan that applies to every fence. Wood quality, construction methods, drainage, soil conditions, sun exposure, irrigation, weather, and regular staining all affect how long a cedar fence lasts.

Using quality cedar, properly installed posts and hardware, and periodically applying a penetrating stain can help protect the fence from the demanding North Texas climate.

Should a cedar fence be stained before installation?

Pre-staining cedar before fence installation offers several advantages because the lumber receives protection before it is exposed to the elements as a completed fence. Texas Backyard Living offers pre-stained cedar fencing using Wood Defender penetrating oil-based stain.

Pre-staining also means homeowners receive a finished fence immediately rather than installing an unfinished cedar fence and scheduling staining as a separate project later.

How often should I stain a cedar fence in Texas?

Most cedar fences in North Texas should be evaluated for re-staining approximately every 3–5 years, although the actual interval depends on sun exposure, weather, irrigation, stain type, and the condition of the wood.

Sections receiving intense afternoon sun may weather faster than shaded areas. Rather than relying only on a fixed schedule, homeowners should monitor the fence for fading, reduced water repellency, and other signs that the protective finish is wearing down.

Is board-on-board fencing worth the extra cost?

Board-on-board cedar fencing is an excellent option for homeowners who prioritize privacy and a more substantial finished appearance. The overlapping pickets help prevent the visible gaps that can develop as cedar naturally changes dimension over time.

Board-on-board fencing requires more material than side-by-side construction, so it generally costs more. For homeowners primarily concerned with keeping the initial fence cost lower, a side-by-side cedar fence may be the better option.

Should I use wood or steel fence posts?

Texas Backyard Living uses heavy-duty steel posts for our cedar privacy fences because the posts are a critical structural component of the fence. Unlike wood posts, steel posts are not susceptible to wood rot and provide a strong foundation for the fence.

Our standard fence specifications include .095 heavy-duty steel posts set approximately 3 feet deep in concrete, with post spacing determined by fence height.

What is the best fence for privacy?

Board-on-board cedar fencing is one of the best options for homeowners who want maximum backyard privacy. The fence pickets overlap rather than simply meeting edge-to-edge, which helps minimize visible gaps between boards.

An 8-foot board-on-board cedar fence can provide additional privacy where local regulations and property conditions allow. Horizontal board-on-board designs are another option for homeowners who want privacy with a more contemporary appearance.

How tall can my fence be?

Maximum residential fence height depends on the city, property location, easements, HOA requirements, and where the fence will be installed on the property. Many municipalities have different requirements for front, side, and rear-yard fences.

Texas Backyard Living installs 6-foot, 7-foot, and 8-foot cedar fences where permitted and appropriate. Homeowners should verify applicable city and HOA requirements before construction.

Do I need a permit to replace my fence?

Fence permit requirements vary by city throughout Dallas–Fort Worth. Whether a permit is required can depend on the municipality, fence height, location, materials, easements, and scope of the project.

HOA approval may also be required even when a municipal permit is not. Requirements should therefore be verified for the specific property before construction begins.

How long does fence installation take?

Fence installation time depends on the size and complexity of the project. Total linear footage, fence height, fence style, gates, demolition of the existing fence, retaining walls, property access, weather, and site conditions can all affect the construction schedule.

Most fences take approximately 1–3 days to install. Texas Backyard Living will provide more specific scheduling information based on the scope of your fence project.

What's included in Texas Backyard Living's 10-year workmanship warranty?

Texas Backyard Living includes a 10-year workmanship warranty with our new pre-stained cedar fences. The workmanship warranty is intended to cover qualifying issues related to our installation and workmanship.

Warranty coverage is different from normal wood characteristics, weathering, maintenance requirements, accidental damage, or other conditions unrelated to installation. Homeowners should refer to the current Texas Backyard Living warranty terms for complete coverage, limitations, and exclusions.
